Does whey protein live up to its reputation?

Whey protein has become a staple supplement for people who engage in weight training and many other types of athletes. There's a good reason - it's a high quality protein with a wide range of benefits. Also, whey protein has more recently been shown to have a number of health benefits.

In addition to the fact that whey protein has an exceptionally high biological value rating and an very high Branch Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) content, a growing number of studies has found whey may also improve immune system function, reduce blood pressure, lower cancer rates, combat HIV, reduce stress and lower cortisol, and improve liver function in those afflicted by certain types of hepatitis, to name just some of the possible benefits.

One of whey protein's major effects is its apparent ability to raise glutathione. The importance of glutathione for the proper function of the immune system cannot be overemphasized. It may be the most important water-soluble antioxidant used by the body.

Which whey protein is best?

Whey is available as either isolate or concentrate, with the isolate usually considered to be preferable because of its higher protein percentage content. However, most methods of processing the isolate will remove or reduce many of the subfractions such as lactoferrin and Glycomacro peptide, which are what provide whey's health giving properties. So, given the isolate's higher cost and minimal protein percentage advantage, concentrate may actually be the better buy.

The best source we've found for whey protein and all bodybuilding supplements is MuscleSurf.com. We prefer the Optimum Nutrition Natural Whey Protein product, but they have great prices on all brands, and usually offer free shipping.
